Job Summary

Counter Sales Associate

McGill Hose is a leading distributor of hydraulic and industrial hoses and a custom hose assembly shop. Family owned since 1962, we have locations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and our East Longmeadow facility is AS9100D certified. The Counter Sales Associate is a fast-paced, front-line customer service role responsible for a variety of parts-ordering functions. You’ll identify parts and hoses, ask the right questions, and work to solve customers’ immediate and future needs. The role also includes picking products, fabricating hose assemblies, and other duties as needed.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, learning new things, and being part of a team that takes pride in delivering exceptional customer service. At McGill, our counter team does much more than take orders. We listen to our customers, understand their applications, recommend solutions, and help keep their businesses running.

You don’t need to know everything about hoses and fittings on day one. We’re willing to train the right person who brings a great attitude, strong work ethic, mechanical curiosity, and a genuine desire to help customers.

Key responsibilities

  • Answer phones, identify parts and hoses, pull parts, and deal directly with customers.
  • Greet all customers and answer phones in a polite and timely fashion.
  • Resolve customer issues or concerns as necessary.
  • Prepare quotes and enter customer orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Enter data and information timely and correctly.
  • Monitor and close open sales orders and purchase orders, along with other administrative needs.
  • Handle cash and credit payments and returns per procedures.
  • Assist customers with product selection, including hoses, fittings, adapters, and related industrial products.
  • Produce hydraulic and industrial hose assemblies according to customer and order specifications.
  • Assist with stocking, organizing, and maintaining inventory, and perform warehouse duties as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain product knowledge through continuous training.
  • Work closely with the rest of the branch team to ensure customers receive timely, accurate service.
  • Be willing to get hands-on and work hard when the job requires it.
  • Focus on positivity and teamwork, and keep a clean, organized work area at all times.
  • Report all workplace injuries, near-misses, accidents, or unsafe conditions to your supervisor immediately, and comply with all OSHA and safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical skills; hose and fitting experience a plus.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Customer-service oriented and a team player.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with customers and team members.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and able to pass a pre-employment background check and/or drug screening as required.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and comply with all company policies, including the Employee Handbook.

The ideal candidate

  • Has excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Is comfortable speaking with customers in person and over the phone.
  • Has strong problem-solving and organizational skills and can multitask.
  • Is dependable, hardworking, and motivated, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Is comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
  • Can work both independently and as part of a team, and takes pride in a clean, organized work area.
  • Is willing to jump in and help wherever needed.
  • Can lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, and can stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the facility as required.

Industrial sales, hydraulic hose, industrial hose, fittings, or fluid-power experience is a definite plus, but it is not required. We are willing to train the right person. We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of a team, not just someone looking for a job. McGill Hose & Coupling has a strong team in Woburn, and we’re looking for a dedicated individual ready to contribute to that success. If you enjoy customer service, problem-solving, sales, and hands-on work, we’d like to hear from you.

Education

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience required.

Training

Paid training includes our S.T.A.M.P.E.D. hose assembly method, Brennan thread identification, NAHAD hose assembly standards, IDCO, crimp equipment, our ERP system, and warehouse safety.

Pay & benefits

  • Starting pay: $24–$30 per hour, based on experience.
  • Annual profit sharing.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid training and opportunity for advancement.
  • Wellness resources.
