Job Summary

Data Engineer Co-Op, Homeowners Insurance

Job Locations-US-MA-Boston

The Plymouth Rock Home Group is an innovative Insurtech start-up within a successful, well-established insurance organization. We quadrupled topline revenue over the past 4 years by revolutionizing the way homeowners insurance is priced, marketed, bought, and sold.  Our customers obtain a home insurance quote in seconds using our @Home quoting engine.  But the fast quote is not the real innovation.  We collect large, detailed data about homes, homeowners and where they are located.  The @Home product uses cutting edge techniques from skilled data scientists across machine learning and artificial intelligence to create models that predict loss costs, likelihood to buy, the best service and coverages we can offer, and the best way to provide them.  The result is a simplified sales process and a feature-rich coverage package that our distributors want to sell and consumers want to buy.

Here is what you will do:

  • Fine-tune data pipelines for performance, efficiency and scalability, enabling faster and more frequent data delivery
  • Build automated data quality checks and idempotent pipeline designs that make our data reliable
  • Automate data cataloging to improve data visibility and surface quality issues early
  • Help build reusable Python libraries for common data ingestion, processing, quality-check and alerting tasks
  • Write clear, concise documentation for code and processes, and keep it current

Here is what you will bring to the table:

  • Currently pursuing a master's degree in computer science, information systems, data engineering or a related field; prior full time data engineering experience is preferred
  • Experience building Python-based data pipelines and data-intensive workflows on AWS (e.g., S3, AWS Lambda, ECS, Step Functions, EventBridge, SageMaker Pipelines)
  • Strong understanding of data engineering concepts, including data lakes, data warehousing and data quality metrics
  • Experience building CI/CD and automated deployment pipelines with tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, Linux and Bash scripting; knowledge of SAS is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with object-oriented and functional programming, and with unit testing
  • Knowledge of Python packaging and distribution tools such as Pip, Poetry, UV
