This position handles complex work with limited technical support but does not hold formal personnel authority.

Key Responsibilities

Advanced Setup & Operation

•    Complete machine setups from drawings, travelers, programs, tooling lists, and setup documentation.
•    Select, assemble, touch off, and verify cutting tools; install and indicate workholding; establish work and tool offsets.
•    Dry run and prove out established programs, validate first pieces, and transition jobs into stable production.
•    Operate complex or close-tolerance jobs while protecting machines, fixtures, tooling, and customer product.

Troubleshooting & Quality
•    Diagnose dimensional variation, chatter, tool life, finish, chip control, workholding, runout, and other process concerns.
•    Make authorized program edits, offset changes, tooling adjustments, and process corrections.
•    Interpret detailed drawings and GD&T and use appropriate precision inspection equipment.
•    Support nonconformance containment, root-cause review, and permanent corrective action.

Technical Support & Improvement
•    Provide hands-on training and technical assistance to Machinist I and II employees.
•    Improve setup documentation, repeatability, tooling use, cycle performance, and process stability.
•    Communicate setup risks, machine limitations, tooling needs, and job status to leads or supervision.
•    Follow required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, chip and coolant handling, lifting, housekeeping, and other machine-shop safety requirements.
•    Stop work and report unsafe conditions, damaged tooling, machine alarms, unusual noise, leaks, or quality concerns.
•    Maintain an orderly work area and complete assigned basic machine-care and cleaning tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications
•    Mastery of Machinist I and II responsibilities.
•    Demonstrated ability to complete CNC setups and prove out established programs independently.
•    Strong blueprint, GD&T, tooling, workholding, speeds and feeds, inspection, and troubleshooting knowledge.
•    Working knowledge of G-code and M-code and ability to make safe on-machine edits.

Performance Expectations
•    Completes setups safely, accurately, and with limited assistance.
•    Solves routine process problems at the source and escalates higher-risk issues.
•    Produces complex parts that meet requirements with complete documentation.
•    Supports training without assuming formal supervisory authority.

Physical & Work Environment
•    Work is performed in an active machine shop with moving equipment, noise, chips, coolants, metalworking fluids, and changing temperatures.
•    Requires regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, handling parts and tooling, and close visual inspection.
•    Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds and use team-lifting or mechanical assistance for heavier items.
•    Required PPE and all applicable safe-work procedures must be followed.
