About the RoleBuild Humans in Control's grassroots operation in your state.As State Director, you will build and lead our on-the-ground organizing in NH or IA. You will recruit volunteers, develop local leaders, build relationships in communities across the state, and turn public concern about AI into sustained grassroots action.This is a build-from-zero role. There is no existing volunteer base or local infrastructure in your state. You will work closely with the Director of State Organizing on overall strategy, but day-to-day execution, judgment, and follow-through will be yours to own.We are especially interested in candidates who know how to organize in conservative, faith-based, veterans, parent, rural, or politically mixed communities.About UsHumans in Control (HIC) is a nonpartisan grassroots movement of parents, workers, veterans, and neighbors fighting to keep people — not a handful of AI companies — in charge of our future.ResponsibilitiesRecruit, train, and develop volunteers and local leaders in your stateBuild relationships with parents, faith communities, veterans, workers, and other local constituency groupsPlan and carry out grassroots campaigns tied to issue advocacyOrganize public-facing activities including town halls, canvassing shifts, house meetings, volunteer trainings, and local eventsBuild and manage a pipeline from first contact to sustained volunteer leadershipIdentify and pursue new organizing opportunities in your state with a high degree of independenceTrack and report core organizing metrics, including recruitment, retention, leadership development, and actions takenRepresent the organization at community events, coalition meetings, and with local media as neededSupport nonpartisan public-engagement efforts during key campaign and election-season periods as neededWhat We Are Looking For2+ years of experience in grassroots organizing, field, campaigns, community outreach, or similar workExperience recruiting, training, and managing volunteersStrong ties to NH or IA, or the ability to build local relationships quicklyExperience with issue advocacy, public campaigns, or community-based organizingAbility to build trust across political and demographic linesComfort with in-person organizing and the practical tools that support it, including event planning, volunteer tracking, and digital communicationWillingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as neededStrong written and verbal communication skillsHigh ownership and sound judgment: comfortable operating independently as the lead organizer in your stateSerious interest in the public risks posed by advanced AI, including risks to children, jobs, families, communities, and longer-term risks from people losing control of advanced systemsComfort working in a small, early-stage teamIdeal Candidates BringExperience organizing in conservative, faith-based, veterans, parent, rural, or politically mixed communitiesExperience with bipartisan or cross-partisan organizingExperience in fast-moving advocacy or election-cycle environmentsExperience identifying, mentoring, and developing volunteer leadersAnticipated StartQ3 2026Reporting StructureThis role reports to the Director of State Organizing. As State Director, you will lead on-the-ground organizing in your state, including volunteer recruitment, local leader development, and campaign execution. You will receive support from the national team on strategy, priorities, and resources, but you should expect to operate with substantial day-to-day autonomy.LocationRemote, based in NH or IA, with regular in-state travel required. This role involves frequent driving for meetings, events, canvassing, and other in-person organizing activity. A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are required. Work travel will be reimbursed. Must be authorized to work in the US.CompensationSalary range: $60,000–$90,000.
