Business Systems & Automation AnalystBMSS Advisors & CPAs
Job Summary
Who We Are
At BMSS Advisors & CPAs, we're more than just a top 100 CPA and advisory firm-we're a people-first, relationship-driven team rooted in integrity, collaboration, and community. Founded in Birmingham, AL in 1991, BMSS has grown to ten thriving locations across Alabama and Mississippi-where we're proud to serve our client base with local heart and national reach.
We're known for our family-friendly culture, commitment to mentorship and life-work balance, and deep roots in the communities we serve. In fact, Accounting Today has recognized us as one of the best accounting firms to work for the last 14 years in a row. Whether it's volunteering locally or mentoring the next generation of the firm, we show up-with expertise, empathy, and heart.
The Opportunity
We're seeking a curious, logical, and communicative Business Systems & Automation Analyst (Entry Level) to join the small internal team that builds the software our firm runs on. We design and build custom web applications, integrations, and automations that replace manual steps and spreadsheets across the firm – scheduling, billing, project management, client data, and more.
We build with modern AI-assisted development tools, so the heart of this role is not memorizing syntax. It's understanding how work actually gets done, breaking it into clear logic, communicating it precisely, and making sure what we build is correct. This position is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals who think in systems and processes, enjoy solving puzzles, and want to grow into a technical role within a collaborative, professional services environment.
What You'll Do
- Learn how our people actually work – partners, managers, and staff – and translate real business processes into clear rules, workflows, and written requirements
- Build and improve internal applications, integrations, and automations using AI-assisted development tools, with guidance and mentorship from experienced team members
- Use SQL to explore, profile, and query data so you can answer questions, power reports, and confirm that what we build matches the source systems
- Work with system APIs and integrations – reading documentation, testing connections, and handling the edge cases that real data always has
- Test and verify results: check the logic, reconcile numbers, and catch problems before they reach users
- Create dashboards, reports, and visualizations that explain complex information clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Communicate often – gather feedback, demo new features, write clear status updates, and document decisions so the next person doesn't have to rediscover them
- Look for ways to make a process faster, simpler, or less error-prone, and then do something about it
- Continuously build your knowledge of data, automation, and emerging AI tools
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, business/data analytics, statistics, accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 1–2 years of professional experience (internships, research, and class or personal projects considered)
- Strong logic and problem-solving skills: you can take a messy process, break it into steps, and spot the exceptions and "what if" cases
- Excellent written and verbal communication: you can explain ideas to non-technical colleagues, and you listen well enough to understand what they actually need
- Working familiarity with data – SQL coursework or projects, or strong Excel skills paired with a real desire to learn SQL
- Comfort with AI tools and a "trust but verify" mindset: you check the work, ask good questions, and don't accept an answer just because it sounds confident
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy – our work involves financial and client data
- A collaborative, curious mindset and a strong love of learning
- A knack for turning big-picture business thinking into detailed, precise outputs
- Nice to have: Programming exposure in any language (e.g., JavaScript, Python), web technologies (e.g., HTML, React), Azure, Power BI/Tableau, or accounting/tax knowledge – not required, but a plus
Why Join BMSS
- Join a small, fast-moving team building tools that people across the firm use every day
- See your work in real use quickly – you will ship meaningful improvements, not busywork
- Mentorship and hands-on training in AI-assisted development, data, and automation
- A culture centered on growth, learning, and community engagement
- Flexible work options and a supportive, team-oriented environment
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses
- Company-paid Medical, Dental & Vision insurance
- 401(k) plan with company match
- Generous PTO, paid holidays, and volunteer days
- Training and career development opportunities in data, automation, and AI-assisted development
