Senior News WriterThe Wright Report
Job Summary
We're looking for someone with 2-15 years of experience as a Senior News Writer to join our editorial team. In this role, you'll turn fast-moving events into clear, accurate, and engaging segments and transcripts for a conservative audience that appreciates old school journalism.
You'll lean on your sharp analytical eye and polished copywriting to deliver timely coverage, while holding every piece to a high editing standard. Vital to success is having pitched and written news articles with an understanding of the "so what" of the content, along with how you'd like an audience to react.
Broadly, the Podcast Host seeks to take complicated news -- especially international news — and find ways to simplify, educate, and inform audiences with good storytelling and a focus on facts, reason, logic, and data. The Host is always looking for the hidden angle that no one is covering but makes all the difference. That's baked into each daily transcript of news.
The tone of the podcast is thus smart but approachable. The Host likes to use everyday analogies to clarify and simplify. When the podcast episode is over, the goal is to leave listeners more deeply informed, enriched, and entertained. Host opinion (when offered) is earned with facts and reason. Hyperbole and shock are not used absent compelling, factual rationale.
If you love breaking down the day's news by sorting through salient details and identifying the hook for a busy listener, this is a great fit.
Responsibilities
-- Read domestic and global news while "on the clock" and "off" to ensure situational awareness. Thorough knowledge of (and interest in) current events, US politics, geopolitics, foreign policy and history needed.
-- Analyze emerging events and data to provide context, accuracy, and insight.
-- Research and write timely news scripts, drawing on news aggregators and original reporting to surface the most relevant developments. The script must be written in the Host’s style and voice, with circa 3,500 to 4,500 words a day.
-- Edit and refine your work and that of other writers to ensure clarity, consistency, and polish before broadcast.
Qualifications
-- Several years in a newsroom, pitching ideas and the "so what" of an article, with the likely audience reception driving the content
-- Strong commitment to accuracy and fact-checking
-- Ability to write news and analysis that may run contrary to your beliefs, but based on logic and reason
-- Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment
-- Excellent written communication and collaboration abilities, with a portfolio of published news writing
-- Strong preference for those who've written scripts or extended voice over for TV, radio, and podcast talent.
