Job Summary

The Flyover is a family of morning email newsletters and a podcast reaching more than 4 million Americans each day with fact-based news delivered without the bias found in traditional media. We're looking for an experienced Weekend Editor to oversee the editorial production of our Saturday and Sunday editions.

This is a remote position responsible for ensuring our newsletters meet The Flyover's high editorial standards from story selection through final publication. The role is compensated at $150 per edition (normal schedule is 2 editions per day) and requires weekly availability on Fridays and Saturdays.

Schedule & Availability

This position requires consistent availability on Fridays and Saturdays to produce our weekend editions. Because news doesn't always follow a schedule, candidates should also be comfortable responding to major breaking news events that require editorial updates outside of normal production hours.

Editorial Development
Own the compilation and development of assigned newsletter editions by selecting the day's most relevant stories, identifying reliable sources, and writing concise, engaging summaries in The Flyover's editorial voice. You'll make editorial decisions about story placement, flow, and overall composition while ensuring each edition is accurate, balanced, and ready for publication.

Quality Control
Serve as the final editorial review before publication, ensuring every edition is accurate, well-written, and ready for readers. This includes reviewing grammar, style, clarity, factual accuracy, formatting, hyperlinks, advertising placements, and overall presentation.

After-Hours Edits
Monitor developing news throughout the evening after editions have been scheduled. When significant stories break, you'll update the newsletter to ensure readers receive the most timely and relevant information the following morning.

Newsletter Publishing/Sending
Prepare and deploy newsletter editions using The Flyover's internal publishing tools and enterprise-level email platform, ensuring each edition is delivered accurately and on schedule.

Exceptional writing and editing skills. This role requires more than a “competent” writer; you’ll need to adopt The Flyover’s tone and write clear, direct prose, and you’ll edit others’ work to the same standard. We need someone with the natural ability to sniff out confusion, cringe, and anything else that lowers our quality level. Finally, you’ll need to do all this at a reasonable clip and keep our processes on schedule.

News judgment. Story selection is a huge part of the role, and you’ll need the ability to sift through the day’s news and decide which stories are most interesting and fit our brand. Additionally, you need the ability to identify the “big idea” in a story and distil it down into a brief paragraph.

Basic technical competence. You are comfortable working with computers, browser-based publishing systems, and digital collaboration tools. While our workflow is straightforward, you should be confident learning new software and navigating multiple systems in a fast-paced production environment.
