Internship Opportunities

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a Washington, DC-based nonpartisan 501(c)(3) research institute focusing on national security and foreign policy. FDD conducts in-depth research, produces accurate and timely analyses, identifies illicit activities, and provides policy options – all with the aim of strengthening U.S. national security and reducing or eliminating threats posed by adversaries and enemies of the United States and other free nations. FDD does not accept donations from any foreign governments.

About FDD's Internship Program

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies offers a variety of internship opportunities designed to provide meaningful professional development. Interns participate in a twice-monthly speaker series featuring senior staff members in a small-group setting and are encouraged to strengthen their academic and analytical skills through close collaboration with FDD scholars and experts. The organization offers stipends and can assist students seeking academic credit; however, stipend eligibility requirements must be met. FDD provides both hybrid and remote internship options.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. It is recommended that interested candidates submit applications early. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Digital and Social Media Department
The Digital Team is seeking full-time and part-time interns to help turn national security research into content people actually stop scrolling for. Interns will see first-hand how policy and social media intersect in Washington's fast-moving information environment.
Depending on your interests, you'll work on one of two tracks (or a blend of both):
Content and Communications: Draft captions for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook; schedule and publish posts; support day-to-day management of FDD's social channels; track what's working and help shape what comes next.
Video, Design, and Multimedia: Clip and edit short-form video for Reels and Shorts; build carousels, graphics, and visual explainers; help give complex foreign policy topics a look and feel that earns attention.
Strong candidates are creative, detail-oriented, and curious about international affairs and national security. Familiarity with Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube formats is preferred. Basic skills in Canva, Adobe InDesign, or Adobe Premiere are a plus, especially for the video, design, and multimedia track. Strong writing skills are a plus for the content track. Applicants should be hardworking and eager to learn new skills.
By the end of the term, interns will have a portfolio of published work, sharper skills in digital storytelling, and a clearer path toward careers in digital media, communications, journalism, design, or policy outreach. The internship includes a great speaker series, career support, and professional skill-building.
