California Appellate Litigator position is available in a growing appellate litigation firm. Kowal Law Group, APC is looking for an ‘attack librarian’ with experience developing creative solutions in trial and appellate courts in California and the 9th Circuit. In addition to the ability to oversee our large appellate caseload and manage workflows, ideal candidates will have:
- Eagerness to take tough cases and develop and present arguments to unfriendly judges.
- Ability to translate dense legalese to normal-speak.
- High comfort level with technology, including AI.
We represent provocative positions, so strong ideological precommitments are discouraged: in selecting cases and causes our only ideology is anti-ideology: nullius in verba— “take no one’s word for it.”
- Develop and present compelling arguments in trial and appellate courts
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support case strategies
- Translate complex legal concepts into clear, persuasive written and oral communications
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and adapt to various legal challenges
- Strong interpersonal skills and capacity to work effectively in a team environment
- Willingness to take on difficult cases and present arguments to potentially unsympathetic judges
- Willingness to become a Certified Appellate Specialist
- Strong tech skills—applicants should already be using ChatGPT or similar AI tools regularly, and should know how to format documents using MS Word styles

- $150k-$200k DOE
- The position is remote; however, we would consider leasing a small office for the right candidate
