We’re looking for a News Editor to manage contract writers, edit hard-hitting, highly-technical news content, and oversee editorial projects for our editorial team on our rapidly growing Control Automation site. This site produces content on innovative topics like robotics, factory automation, sensors, and industrial Internet-of-Things, that are used in diverse industries from agriculture and automotive to medical and mining.

This role requires a detail-oriented person who can both work independently and support a dynamic editorial team publishing technical content for control and automation engineers around the world.

You will need to be able to manage multiple freelance engineers and content projects with daily and weekly deadlines. This role drives editorial on the assigned domain, maintains long-term relationships with industry contacts, and requires meticulous organization.

An average workday for a News Editor includes:

  • Copy editing (for flow, clarity, and accuracy)
  • Detailed editing, including article restructuring, fact-checking, and source verification
  • Formatting and CMS entry
  • Topic ideation (examining press releases and assigned domain competitors, staying current on trends, etc.)
  • Communication with writers, including assigning article topics
  • Communication with industry contacts (written, verbal via interviews, or in-person at conferences and events)
  • Collaboration with fellow editors, including those on other EETech sites
  • Organizing workflows
  • Basic SEO, including keyword research
  • Managing content coverage within the scope of the assigned domain
  • Writing editorial content when appropriate (e.g., urgent news)

Required Skills/Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English, or related field of study
  • 3+ years of professional writing and/or editing experience
  • Ability to interview subject-matter experts in a technical field
  • Outstanding copy editing skills
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Exceptional organization and the ability to prioritize under pressure
  • Ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Positive, collaborative attitude and driven work ethic
  • Proven researching skills

Preferred Skills/Education/Experience:

  • Technical writing
  • Experience with ExpressionEngine and other CMS programs
  • Experience with or the ability to learn organizational platforms and G-Suite
  • Basic graphic design skillsFamiliarity with SEO
  • Familiarity with content licensing
  • Experience with project management tools
  • Experience working with freelance writers/contractors — bonus points if you’ve worked with ESL (English Second Language) writers
  • Experience with engineering technologies — bonus points if you’ve worked with engineers in the past
