Reports to: Executive Vice PresidentJob Summary: The Director of Communications leads strategic messaging, media relations, and public perception campaigns for Heritage Action for America, one of America’s largest and most impactful conservative advocacy groups. The Director of Communications works to insert Heritage Action’s voice into policy debates in Washington, D.C. and state capitals across the country, driving the public narrative on the issues that Heritage Action engages on. With the backing of Heritage Action’s Sentinels, the Director assists the grassroots and government relations teams with comprehensive campaigns to steer public policy. This position requires a forward looking, strategic mind that is prepared to use creative means to keep our political opponents off balance as Heritage Action seeks to move public opinion on key issue sets by defining the language and the topic of discussion. Heritage Action is on offense, and the Director of Communications is responsible for developing a strategic communications plan that supports that by being pro-active and deliberate.Job Duties:In conjunction with the press assistant, draft, edit, and publish talking points, press releases, op-eds, statements, and other materials.Manage and lead the Heritage Action Communications department, providing guidance and mentorship to its members taking responsibility for all administrative functions inherent in the conduct of department business. Build and maintain relationships with reporters, influencers, and other media contacts to promote Heritage Action’s voice in media and book Heritage Action leaders on radio, podcast, and TV interviews.Work with communications staffers on Capitol Hill to provide support for and amplification of legislative activities endorsed by HeritageCoordinate across the Heritage Enterprise to build communications plans to promote specific policy solutions and priorities at the state and federal level.Serve as chief spokesman for Heritage Action in conversations with members of the press.Manage all public messaging distributed by Heritage Action, with specific oversight of products like newsletters, social media posts, email campaigns, and letters.Continually monitor media to stay abreast of government and political news.Work collaboratively and think creatively to assist other senior leaders at Heritage Action on strategic projects and goals.Qualifications:Education: High School diploma required Experience: 5+ of relevant work experience in political communications, public relations, public affairs, journalism, or related fields; prior work experience on Capitol Hill strongly preferredCommunication: Must possess strong capability in writing press releases, statements, and op-eds; strong command of grammar and AP style; must have on-the-record experience with prior on-air experience preferredTechnology: Google Workspace and Microsoft SuiteOther Requirements:Understand and support Heritage Action’s mission to fight for conservative policies in Washington, D.C.Established relationships with reporters, bookers, and producers, specifically on Capitol Hill and in the Washington DC media market.High level of professionalism (adaptability, maturity, integrity, accountability).Extensive knowledge and understanding of media relations, including knowledge of journalism and PR practices.General understanding of and interest in the legislative process (state and federal) and inner workings of Congress.Capable of distilling complex policy information into a clear, compelling, and consistent message. Excellent attention to detail.Capable of delivering quality products on short timelines and in a fast-paced environment, while managing multiple priorities. Occasional travel required.
