August Venture Talent, a startup-focused recruiting firm, is serving as talent advisor to the founder of a well-funded B2B software startup in Boise, Idaho. (Local candidates strongly preferred, will consider relocation assistance. No remote work.)
We're seeking a highly skilled backend developer with experience building out structured and well-documented APIs and data schemas with versioned migrations to join our client as a Senior or Staff Software Engineer.
As one of the first 10 team members and one of the first 6 engineers, you'll play a critical role in shaping the architecture and engineering of our client's product and broader technical platform.
We are building this engineering team with the philosophy of hiring the smartest and most seasoned talent, all working together in Boise, and equipping each of those people with cutting-edge AI development tools to kill the drudgery of low-level tasks, unit tests, and documentation.

Current funding allows for at least two years of runway before revenue generation or additional funding is required.

Help to capture the long-term vision for our product roadmap, and work with teammates to convert that into a step-by-step plan for how to sequence the building of our product and technical platform to support it.
Design and engineer back-end services and contracts supporting front-end features and user experience for the product across web, desktop and mobile.
Build out database schemas with versioned migrations as we iterate it.
Engage with users and customers to understand how they think, what they need, and how to build the best product to serve them.
Write code that is scalable, manageable, reliable, and testable.
- Ability to ship work without oversight; correction in technical approach required very infrequently
- Functional breadth of knowledge across many areas of the technologies we are building in, and is self-driven in expanding knowledge when necessary
- Experience building out structured and well-documented APIs and data schemas with versioned migrations
- Works independently but may lean on senior peers when novel technical problems arise
- Identifies possible maintainability and scalability concerns in current projects, and addresses them or consults with peers to determine the best way to address them
- Consistently keeps teammates informed when shipping changes and making decisions that impact them
- Understanding of our business objectives and product strategy to inform engineering decisions
- Understands the intricacies of some systems beyond the ones they are personally involved with; able to serve as a domain expert for the areas of primary focus
- Documenting API specifications (OpenAPI experience)
- Using Terraform to deploy code to cloud environments
- Implementing and documenting distributed event-based architectures (AsyncAPI experience)
- Shows interest in new technologies not immediately needed
- Ability to contribute to product strategy and how best to achieve business objectives
