JOB SUMMARY
The head coach of the men’s volleyball team is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the team. The coach is responsible for the planning, scheduling, and organization of all practices and competitions. They are also expected to create and follow the team budget for each season. They are to understand and adhere to the Club Sports policies and procedures while attending department meetings and training sessions as needed. The head coach is also responsible for overseeing and leading the assistant coaches. The qualified applicant must show strong interpersonal communication skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Schedule team practices and competitions for each season
- Plan, organize, and implement team practice plans
- Coordinate team travel needs for away competitions
- Oversee and follow team budget each season
- Order team equipment and apparel
- Track student-athlete’s academic progress
- Coordinate with and assign duties for assistant coaches
- Complete all necessary league eligibility forms, rosters, and coaching materials
- Recruit new student-athletes
- Attend annual required Club Sports events such as trainings, choice awards, and the team paperwork meeting.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for assistant men’s volleyball coaches.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
Four-year college degree, 3+ years in a head coach volleyball position at the high school or collegiate level. Strong leadership experience required. Well-developed communication skills.

- Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Frequently required to stand for extended periods to perform coaching duties.
- Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the facility.
- Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
- Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is an indoor athletics facility.
Driving Requirements
Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
