Job Summary

The Director of Communications provides strategic leadership and hands-on execution for all external and internal communications for 1792 Exchange. This role is responsible for elevating the organization’s brand as a trusted provider of detailed data, robust research, authoritative analysis, and tactical tools that help businesses navigate ideological pressures and get back to business. The Director of Communications develops and implements comprehensive communication strategies that advance the organization’s goals, expand its reach, and ensure consistent and compelling messaging across all channels and platforms. A critical component of this role is supervising and mentoring a Writer/Editor and a Social Media Manager.

Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy that promotes 1792 Exchange’s mission, research, and programs to key audiences, including business leaders, investors, asset managers, policy leaders, media, donors, and aligned coalition partners

  • Craft and refine organization-wide messaging that elevates brand credibility and reinforces the principle-based neutrality framework

  • Lead crisis communication planning and rapid response messaging when needed

  • Ensure brand consistency and message discipline across all public platforms, content, and communications channels

  • Manage the communications budget, resource allocation, and vendor relationships

Media Relations & Public Affairs

  • Build and maintain strong relationships as the primary point of contact for national, regional, and beat reporters, editors, hosts, producers, creators, and influencers

  • Secure high-value placements, pitch stories, place op-eds, and increase media coverage of 1792 Exchange’s research and thought leadership

  • Prepare senior leaders for interviews, panels, speeches, and public appearances

  • Conduct media monitoring and deep analysis, identifying trends and opportunities to both feature 1792’s perspective in existing conversation and create new conversations framed to advance the mission

  • Draft and rapidly deploy press releases, advisories, op-eds, and statements on breaking news and organizational announcements

  • Supervise the Writer/Editor in the development of all major organizational publications, including op-eds, reports, newsletters, and website copy, ensuring superior quality and adherence to editorial standards

Content Development & Editorial Oversight

  • Oversee creation of all written materials, including reports, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, policy briefs, website content, and marketing collateral

  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and brand alignment across all publications and digital content

  • Collaborate with research and programs teams to translate complex information into accessible content

  • Provide high-level editing and quality control for all publications and external-facing materials

Digital Strategy & Social Media

  • Oversee the content and strategic development of the 1792 website, ensuring it is a dynamic and effective hub for targeted audiences

  • Direct overall digital communications strategy to include website content, email engagement, and social media channels

  • Provide guidance to the Social Media Manager on platform-specific strategy (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), campaign planning, audience engagement and growth, digital reach and reputation management

  • Ensure digital content is consistent with 1792’s mission, values, and brand voice

Coalition & Partner Communications

  • Support coalition-building efforts by developing communication materials for partner organizations, business leaders, investment advisors, allied groups, and others

  • Produce tool-kits, messaging, and shareable content that help partners harmonize their advocacy with 1792 Exchange’s work in shared spaces

  • Strengthen relationships with external stakeholders through clear, consistent, and strategic communication

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Writer/Editor: Provide editorial direction, assign writing tasks, review all content for accuracy and quality, and support professional development

  • Social Media Manager: Oversee content strategy, ensure consistency of brand voice, set performance goals, and review analytics with the manager to guide improvements

  • Coordinate workflows between the content production (Writer/Editor) and distribution (Social Media Manager and Media Relations) functions to maximize reach and impact

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, Business, a related field, or comparable work experience

  • Progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, public affairs, media relations, or related fields

  • Demonstrated success developing multi-channel communications strategies and leading high-visibility messaging efforts

  • Proven ability to cultivate media relationships and generate high-value coverage

  • Experience supervising staff and managing collaborative workflows

  • Strong understanding of business policy, corporate governance, cultural issues affecting the private sector, and the importance of principle-based neutrality

  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and respond quickly to emerging developments

  • A strong commitment to the mission and principles of the 1792 Exchange
