Job Summary
TITLE: PRESS MANAGERREPORTS TO: SENIOR DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONSJOB SUMMARY: The Press Manager owns the execution of Heritage Action’s earned media strategy in alignment with organizational priorities and messaging direction. This role is accountable for driving impact through disciplined pitching, message alignment, and follow-through to ensure Heritage Action’s voice is clear, consistent, and impactful in the media.This seat is designed for a politically fluent communications professional with sound judgment who prioritizes outcomes over activity and takes full ownership of press relations. The manager focuses on what drives positive coverage, not on checking boxes.The Heritage Foundation (501 c(3)) and Heritage Action (501 c(4)) work cross-functionally. The Manager will integrate Heritage Foundation research into Heritage Action media to promote public education on broader Heritage issues. The manager will also partner with the Heritage Action government relations team on media campaigns to help achieve policy wins at the state and federal levels.The role reports to the Senior Director of Marketing amp; Communications and works in close coordination with executive leadership.JOB DUTIES:Core Accountabilities (What This Position Owns)1. Earned Media Strategy amp; Pitching· Own the development and execution of press pitches aligned with Heritage Action’s strategic priorities.· Identify proactive media opportunities tied to policy, advocacy, and political moments.· Pitch, follow up, and maintain relationships with relevant reporters and outlets.· Track outcomes and refine approach based on what drives coverage and influence.2. Message Alignment amp; Strategic Judgment· Work closely with the Senior Director of Marketing amp; Communications to maintain messaging consistency across all media and marketing channels.· Ensure all press materials accurately reflect Heritage Action-approved messaging and strategic direction.· Ensure media communications align with approved organizational messaging and government relations priorities.· Apply sound political judgment to tone, framing, and spokesperson selection.3. Press Materials (As Needed for Impact)· Work closely with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications to develop clear talking points, press releases, press packets, quote sheets, and editorials.· Ensure produced materials are concise, newsworthy, and ready for approval.4. Right-Sized Media Operations· Maintain extensive media/journalist lists and relationships.· Utilize tracking software and clipping systems for pitching and internal reporting.Success Looks Like (Measurable Outcomes)· Production of high-level executive media reports focused on influence and outcomes, not volume.· Earned media coverage advances Heritage Action priorities and reinforces strategic narratives.· Pitches are targeted, timely, and followed through consistently.· Press execution is owned end-to-end, with minimal need for oversight or rework.· Messaging is aligned across earned media, digital, and marketing channels.Skills amp; Competencies:Required· Demonstrated ability to write and edit clear, concise press materials under short deadlines· Political, policy, or government affairs communications experience· Demonstrated success pitching and securing earned media· Strong sound political judgment and message discipline· Ability to quickly prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment· Comfort operating with autonomy and ownership· Ability to successfully manage multiple workflows with autonomyPreferred· Familiarity with Capitol Hill, state advocacy, or conservative policy organizations· Comfortable working directly with senior leadership or principals· Experience with Meltwater, Marketo, Craft CMS, and CRM systemsEducation· Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science, or related field preferred.Compensation and Benefits:Heritage Action offers a highly competitive benefits package that includes, but is not limited to, best-in-class health care, vision, and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement funding, “take what you need” PTO and sick leave, 14 weeks of paid leave for new moms and 6 weeks of paid leave for new dads, among other programs. The salary range for this role is $72,000 - $85,000 annually. This range is a good faith estimate, and the final salary offered to a selected candidate depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, and other qualifications; internal and external market pay for comparable jobs; and level of hire based on aforementioned qualifications.
